The City

A city built around a temple

Older than Rome, mentioned by Greek and Roman traders, the seat of the ancient Tamil Sangam academies - Madurai has been a great city for at least two and a half thousand years, and it is still laid out as it always was: in concentric square streets spiralling out from a single, astonishing temple at its heart.

That temple, the Meenakshi Amman Temple, is the masterpiece of the south - a walled town of shrines and halls crowned by fourteen gopurams, towers a hundred feet high and covered, every inch, in thousands of brightly painted gods, demons and beasts. Around it presses a city of relentless colour and devotion: flower markets and tailors' lanes, a Nayak palace, the museum that holds Gandhi's blood-stained dhoti, and food worth travelling the length of India for.

This guide covers everything for a day or two in Madurai - the great temple and its nightly ceremony, the palace and the bazaars, where to stay and what to eat, and the temple towns and hills beyond.

What to See

Going deeper: we have a full guide to the Meenakshi Amman Temple — its history, the fourteen gopurams, the 985-pillar hall, the nightly palanquin ceremony and the practical detail of visiting.

Reading the architecture: Madurai is Nayak-period Dravida at full scale, and the exact opposite of Chola Thanjavur — Nagara vs Dravida explains the inversion that separates them.

The wonders of Madurai

A temple-town of painted towers, a Nayak palace, a moving museum and the bazaars that ring the shrine - the heart of the Tamil south.

The Meenakshi Amman Temple, MaduraiTemple · half day

The Meenakshi Amman Temple

The masterpiece of the south

The Meenakshi Amman Temple is not so much a building as a walled sacred city - hectares of shrines, tanks and pillared halls dedicated to the fish-eyed goddess Meenakshi and her consort Sundareswarar (Shiva), surrounded by fourteen towering, riotously colourful gopurams. Within are the golden lotus tank, the thousand-pillared hall (now a museum of bronzes), the musical pillars, and a constant tide of pilgrims, elephants and flower-sellers.

Come for the dawn worship and again for the nightly ceremony, when Sundareswarar is carried in procession to Meenakshi's chamber - the temple at its most alive. (Note: non-Hindus may not enter the innermost sanctums, but the rest is open and overwhelming.)

02

The night ceremony

Palli Arai · ~9pm

Each evening an image of Sundareswarar is borne in a flower-decked palanquin, to drums and chanting, from his shrine to the goddess's bedchamber for the night - a beautiful, intimate temple ritual that visitors may watch.

03

Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal

17th-century palace

The grand Indo-Saracenic palace of the Nayak kings - a vast courtyard ringed by colossal pillars and stucco, with a nightly sound-and-light show on Madurai's history. A short walk from the temple.

04

Gandhi Memorial Museum

Tamukkam Palace

One of India's finest Gandhi museums, in an old palace - the story of the freedom struggle, and the blood-stained dhoti Gandhi was wearing when he was assassinated. Moving and beautifully done.

05

The bazaars

Around the temple

The concentric streets ringing the temple - the flower market, the tailoring and textile lanes, the brassware and the sweet shops - one of the great market experiences of India.

06

Koodal Azhagar & the other temples

Living shrines

The ancient Koodal Azhagar Vishnu temple and the city's other shrines - quieter counterpoints to the great Meenakshi complex.

07

Thiruparankundram

8 km

One of the six abodes of Murugan, a striking rock-cut hill temple just outside the city - a sacred and scenic half-day.

08

The temple tank & ghats

Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam

The huge temple tank with its island shrine, the scene of the spectacular Float Festival - a calm, photogenic corner of the city.

Getting Your Bearings

Onward to Srirangam: Two hours north at Tiruchirappalli is Srirangam — seven concentric walls, twenty-one gopurams, and a town living inside the outer enclosures.

Onward to Rameswaram: 170 km east, Ramanathaswamy holds the longest temple corridor in the world and the twenty-two wells you are doused from before darshan.

The lie of the city

  • Around the temple — the old walled city in its concentric streets, with the Meenakshi temple, the bazaars and the Nayak palace; the heart of any visit.
  • The river & West Veli — the banks of the Vaigai and the main commercial streets ringing the old town.
  • Tamukkam & the museums — the eastern quarter with the Gandhi Museum and the gardens.
  • The hills & outskirts — Thiruparankundram, the temple tank and the road towards Chettinad and the Western Ghats.

Good to Know

Practical Madurai

Getting there

Madurai Airport (IXM) is about 12 km from the centre, with flights from Chennai, Bengaluru and beyond; the city is also a major railhead. We arrange private transfers.

At the temple

Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes (a deposit is provided), and expect security and a small camera fee. Non-Hindus may not enter the innermost sanctums but can explore most of the complex. Dawn and the ~9pm ceremony are the best times; a guide brings it alive.

Getting around

The old city around the temple is walkable (and gloriously chaotic); a private car and driver handle the museums, the hill temples and day trips. Autos serve the lanes.

Money

ATMs and cards in hotels and bigger shops; carry cash for the bazaars, tailors and street food. The currency is the Indian rupee (INR).

Climate & etiquette

The Tamil plains are warm to hot year-round - light cottons, sun protection and modest dress for the temple. Eat busy, freshly cooked food; the street food is a highlight. Drink bottled or filtered water.

Visa

Most nationalities need only an Indian e-Visa, applied for online before travel - we send a step-by-step guide with every booking.
