The City

A blue-mountain retreat

High in the Nilgiris - the 'blue mountains' of the Western Ghats - sits Ooty, the hill station the British built as the summer capital of the Madras Presidency and the most famous mountain retreat in south India. At 2,240 metres the air is cool and sharp, the slopes are clothed in tea and eucalyptus and the occasional stand of shola forest, and the whole place keeps a gentle, faded colonial charm.

Its great romance is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway - the UNESCO 'toy train' that hauls itself up the mountain on a rack-and-pinion, through tunnels and tea, from the plains to Coonoor and Ooty. Around the town lie the colonial Botanical Gardens, a boating lake, the highest peak in the Nilgiris, and the lovely, quieter sister hill station of Coonoor with its tea estates and viewpoints.

This guide covers everything for a few days in Ooty - the toy train and the gardens, the tea and the viewpoints, where to stay and what to eat, and the Nilgiri hills and wildlife beyond.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway

The romance of Ooty

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the great Ooty experience - a UNESCO World Heritage line, opened in 1908, on which a little blue steam-and-diesel train grips the mountain by a rack-and-pinion rail and climbs through sixteen tunnels and past the tea gardens from the plains to Coonoor and on to Ooty. The most beautiful and dramatic leg is the steep climb between Mettupalayam, Coonoor and Ooty.

Ride a leg of the toy train - ideally Coonoor to Ooty - for the views, the engineering and the sheer romance of it. We book your seats in advance.
