Mysuru, the Royal City
The graceful old capital of the Wodeyars - of a palace lit by a hundred thousand bulbs, a sacred hill, sandalwood and silk, and the most splendid Dasara in India.
The City
A palace city of silk & sandalwood
For six centuries Mysuru was the seat of the Wodeyar dynasty, and it remains the most graceful and regal city in the south - tree-lined, unhurried, scented (so they say) with sandalwood, and crowned by one of the most flamboyant palaces in India.
The Amba Vilas Palace, rebuilt in dazzling Indo-Saracenic style in 1912, is the city's glory - and on Sunday nights and through Dasara it is outlined by nearly a hundred thousand lights. Around it lie the sacred Chamundi Hill, the fragrant Devaraja Market, gardens and galleries, and workshops of the famous Mysore silk and sandalwood - all building to Dasara, the ten-day royal festival that is the grandest in the land.
This guide covers everything for a regal day or two in Mysuru - the palace and the hill, the market and the crafts, where to stay and what to eat, and the wonders within reach.

The splendour of Mysuru
A dazzling palace, a sacred hill, a fragrant market and the grandest festival in India - the glories of the royal city.
Palace · half dayThe Amba Vilas (Mysore) Palace
Rebuilt in 1912 in extravagant Indo-Saracenic style, the Mysore Palace is among the most visited and most flamboyant in India - a riot of domes, arches, stained glass, carved doors, mirrored halls and the golden royal throne. On Sunday evenings and throughout Dasara, its outline is traced by nearly a hundred thousand bulbs, and the whole palace blazes against the night.
Visit by day for the opulent interiors, and return at dusk for the illumination - the defining sight of Mysuru.
Chamundi Hill
A 1,000-foot hill above the city crowned by the Sri Chamundeshwari Temple to the city's guardian goddess, with the giant Nandi bull on the climb and sweeping views over Mysuru. The spiritual heart of the kingdom.
Devaraja Market
A wonderful, century-old covered bazaar of flower garlands, fruit, spices, kumkum powder pyramids, bananas and sandalwood - one of the most photogenic markets in India.
St Philomena's Church
One of the largest churches in India, a soaring neo-Gothic cathedral modelled on Cologne - a striking counterpoint to the palaces and temples.

The Jaganmohan Palace art gallery of Raja Ravi Varma paintings and royal treasures, and the charming Mysore Rail Museum - quieter pleasures.
Mysore Sandal & Silk
The Government Silk Weaving Factory and the Sandal Oil works - the home of genuine Mysore silk saris and the world-famous sandalwood soap and oil.
Brindavan Gardens
The terraced, illuminated gardens below the KRS dam, 20 km out, with their evening musical-fountain show - a classic Mysore family outing.
Karanji & Mysore Zoo
One of India's oldest and best zoos, and the Karanji lake and aviary at the foot of Chamundi Hill - lovely for families and birdwatchers.
Getting Your Bearings
The Hoysala temples: Somanathapura is 35 km away and Belur and Halebidu around 150 — all three UNESCO-inscribed in 2023. See the Hoysala guide.

Practical Mysuru
Getting there
Mysuru is about 3 hours from Bengaluru by the expressway or the fast train (a lovely journey); it has a small airport (MYQ) with limited flights. We arrange private transfers and trains.
Getting around
The centre is compact and walkable; a private car and driver handle Chamundi Hill, Srirangapatna and the gardens. Tongas (horse carriages) still trot near the palace.
Seeing the palace
The Mysore Palace is open daily; the illumination is on Sunday evenings and through Dasara. Shoes are removed inside (a deposit is provided). We arrange tickets and a guide.
Dasara
If you come for Dasara (Sep/Oct), book hotels and seats months ahead - the city is at its most spectacular and busiest. We plan it well in advance.
Money & safety
ATMs and cards are widely accepted; carry cash for the market and tongas. Mysuru is calm, friendly and very safe, including for women. Eat freshly cooked food and drink bottled or filtered water.
Visa
Most nationalities need only an Indian e-Visa, applied for online before travel - we send a step-by-step guide with every booking.
