Bengaluru, the Garden City
India's greenest, most temperate metropolis - of botanical gardens and palaces, ancient temples and modern cafes, craft beer and the gateway to the south.
The City
Green, mild and quietly grand
Bengaluru wears two reputations lightly. To the world it is the Silicon Valley of India, the booming capital of the country's technology industry; to those who know it, it is still the Garden City - a leafy, temperate town at 900 metres where the bougainvillea spills over old bungalows, two great gardens give the city its lungs, and the climate is the gentlest of any Indian metropolis.
It is not a city of headline monuments so much as a place to enjoy - the glasshouse and ancient tree of Lalbagh, the shaded paths of Cubbon Park, a Tudor palace, fine old temples, and a cafe, brewery and dining culture that is among the best in India. Cosmopolitan, easy-going and youthful, it makes a comfortable, mild base and the natural gateway to the wonders of Karnataka and the south.
This guide covers everything for an easy Bengaluru - the gardens and the grand sights, where to stay and what to eat and drink, the shopping and the day trips, and the practical detail.

The best of Bengaluru
Gardens, a palace and old temples, with the city's famous cafe and brewery culture woven through - the highlights of the Garden City.
Central · half dayLalbagh & Cubbon Park
The 240-acre Lalbagh Botanical Garden, laid out by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan in the 18th century, centres on a glittering glasshouse modelled on London's Crystal Palace and a rock said to be 3,000 million years old, with twice-yearly flower shows. Across the centre, leafy Cubbon Park shades the State Library, the museums, and - on its edge - the floodlit granite legislature of the Vidhana Soudha, the grandest building in the city. Together they are the green heart of Bengaluru.
Bangalore Palace
The Wodeyar kings' fairy-tale palace, modelled on Windsor Castle - turrets, fortified towers and ornate, faintly eccentric interiors, set in its own grounds. A wonderfully odd echo of England in the south.
Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace & Fort
The elegant teak summer palace of the "Tiger of Mysore", all carved pillars and frescoes, beside the remains of the old fort and the bustle of the City Market - the city's 18th-century core.
Bull Temple & Basavanagudi
The 16th-century Dodda Basavana Gudi, with its huge monolithic Nandi bull, and the nearby Dodda Ganesha - the heart of old, traditional Bangalore, with the November groundnut fair (Kadlekai Parishe).
ISKCON & the temples
The huge, glittering ISKCON temple on its hill, and the city's many shrines - a serene contrast to the cafes and the code.
The breweries & cafe culture
India's craft-beer capital - the microbreweries of Indiranagar and Koramangala (Toit, Arbor) - and a cafe scene built on the world's finest filter coffee. An evening's pleasure in itself.
HAL Aerospace & the museums
The HAL Aerospace Museum, the interactive Visvesvaraya museum, and the National Gallery of Modern Art in a heritage mansion - strong, varied collections.
Bannerghatta & the green edges
The Bannerghatta safari and butterfly park on the southern fringe, and the lakes and tree parks that still thread the city - easy nature within reach.
MG Road, Church Street & UB City
The shopping-and-dining spine of MG and Brigade Roads, the bookshops and bars of Church Street, and the luxury mall of UB City - the cosmopolitan, easy-going pulse of the city.

Best timeWarm but rarely fierce thanks to the altitude - mid-30s by day, cool evenings. Still a perfectly pleasant time.
Pleasant showers keep the city green and cool - rarely a washout, and lovely for the gardens and the surrounding hills.

Good to Know
Practical Bengaluru
Getting there
Kempegowda International (BLR) is about 40 km north - a 1 to 1.5 hour drive (longer in traffic). It is one of India's best airports, with wide domestic and international links. We build in transfer time and provide a private car.
Getting around
The Namma Metro is growing and useful on key routes, but the city's notorious traffic means a private car with a driver is the comfortable way to see the sights. App-cabs and autos fill the gaps.
Climate
The great luxury of Bengaluru is its weather - mild and pleasant almost year-round thanks to the altitude. A light layer for cool evenings is usually all you need.
Money
One of India's most card-friendly cities; carry some cash for tiffin houses, autos and markets. The currency is the Indian rupee (INR).
Safety
Cosmopolitan, easy-going and generally safe, including for women, with normal city precautions. English is widely spoken. Eat busy, freshly cooked food and drink bottled or filtered water.
Visa
Most nationalities need only an Indian e-Visa, applied for online before travel - we send a step-by-step guide with every booking.
Bangalore is the rare Indian city you slow down in - for the coffee, the gardens, the cool evening air, and the unhurried good life beneath the gulmohar trees.
