Why this journey

Tea, Spice, Water & Sand

Kerala earns its nickname — a long green ribbon of coast where the pace drops the moment you arrive. In one week you move from the colonial lanes of Fort Kochi to the tea terraces of Munnar, the spice forests of Periyar, the glassy backwaters of Alleppey, and the slow gold of the Arabian Sea.

We travel it the way it wants to be travelled — unhurried, by tea-estate bungalow, spice plantation and a private kettuvallam houseboat — with the wildlife, the food and the Ayurveda woven in. Kerala is one of the most photogenic states we film.

It is India's great unwind, and the perfect counterpoint after the intensity of the north.

This is the classic Kerala arc - from the spice-trading history of Fort Kochi, with its Chinese fishing nets and old Jew Town, to a night aboard a private houseboat on the Alleppey backwaters, drifting past paddy fields and village life, and finishing on the southern beaches around Kovalam or Marari. Green, gentle and slow, it is the most soothing journey in South India.

The Itinerary

Day by Day

A representative 6-night flow. Every departure is privately tailored — we add Varkala, Kovalam or a Kumarakom upgrade and tune the pace to you.

Day1

Arrive Fort Kochi

Arrival · Kochi

Met at Cochin airport and settled into a heritage hotel in atmospheric Fort Kochi. As the light softens you walk the waterfront beneath the cantilevered Chinese fishing nets, past the 16th-century St Francis Church where Vasco da Gama was first buried, and into the spice-scented lanes and antique shops of Mattancherry. The evening ends with a performance of Kathakali, the painted, gesture-rich dance-drama of Kerala.

Stay Fort Kochi · Brunton BoatyardMeals Dinner

Highlight The cantilevered Chinese fishing nets silhouetted against a copper sunset on the harbour.

Day2

Kochi to Munnar

Kochi → Munnar (≈4 hrs)

A morning climb east into the Western Ghats, the air cooling and the road winding up past tumbling waterfalls and the first tea slopes. You reach Munnar's green amphitheatre of estates by afternoon, with time to settle into your hill retreat and breathe the cool, fragrant air.

Stay Munnar · tea-estate bungalowMeals Breakfast

Highlight Tea terraces folding into mist as the road climbs into the hills.

Day3

Munnar · the tea hills

Munnar

A full day in the tea country. Early to Eravikulam National Park, home of the endangered Nilgiri tahr, before the mist lifts; then a working tea estate and the quirky Tea Museum to see the leaf become the cup. The afternoon takes in the Mattupetty dam and the long view from Top Station, the plains of Tamil Nadu opening far below.

Stay Munnar · tea-estate bungalowMeals Breakfast

Highlight Dawn over the rolling tea hills, pluckers already moving through the bushes.

Day4

Munnar to Periyar

Munnar → Thekkady (≈3.5 hrs)

Down through the cardamom hills to Thekkady and the Periyar Tiger Reserve. A guided walk through a working spice plantation - cardamom, pepper, clove and vanilla - explains Kerala's spice wealth, and at dusk a boat on Periyar lake drifts past submerged trees, with elephant, gaur and deer coming to the water's edge.

Stay Thekkady · Spice VillageMeals Breakfast

Highlight Elephants at the water's edge from the Periyar lake boat as the light goes soft.

Day5

Periyar to an Alleppey houseboat

Thekkady → Alleppey (≈4 hrs)

West to the backwaters at Alleppey, where you board a private kettuvallam - a converted rice-barge with its own crew and cook. Through the long afternoon you cruise the palm-lined canals past paddy fields, toddy-tappers and village life, meals prepared fresh on board, and moor for a still night on the water under the stars.

Stay Alleppey · private houseboatMeals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Highlight The backwaters turning glassy at dusk, lamplight from the villages along the banks.

Day6

Backwaters to the coast

Alleppey → Marari / Kovalam (≈1–3 hrs)

A final backwater breakfast as the mist lifts off the water, then a transfer to the coast for a gentle finish - the long, quiet sands of Marari or the livelier curve of Kovalam, an Ayurvedic massage, and the warm Arabian Sea.

Stay Coast · Marari Beach / Leela KovalamMeals Breakfast

Highlight The Arabian Sea turning copper as the fishing boats come in at sunset.

Day7

Common Questions

Kerala Backwaters & Beaches, Answered

September to March is ideal — dry, warm and green after the monsoon. June to August brings the monsoon, which is the traditional season for authentic Ayurveda treatments and dramatic green landscapes at lower prices.
You have a private crewed kettuvallam — en-suite bedroom(s), a shaded deck and a chef cooking fresh Kerala meals — drifting the backwaters by day and moored in a quiet canal overnight. It is the signature Kerala experience.
Six nights covers Kochi, Munnar, Periyar, the backwaters and a beach finish. Add two or three nights for Kumarakom, Varkala or a dedicated Ayurveda programme.
Exceptionally — gentle pace, wildlife, beaches and the houseboat make it a favourite for both. We tailor the routing for young children or for a romantic, slow honeymoon.
Yes — the temple towns of Madurai and Thanjavur and the French quarter of Pondicherry sit right next door, for a 10–14 night South India journey.
