Why this journey

The Golden City & the Thar

Jaisalmer rises gold from the Thar - a living sandstone fortress still inhabited after 850 years, surrounded by lacework havelis and the deep desert. It is the most romantic corner of Rajasthan, and the gateway to the dunes.

We pair two unhurried days exploring the fort and havelis with the desert's great set-piece: a sunset camel safari onto the rolling Sam dunes, Manganiyar musicians in firelight, and a night under brilliant stars at a luxury desert camp.

It is a short, cinematic escape - and slots easily onto a wider Rajasthan journey.

This is the Thar at its most romantic - the golden city of Jaisalmer, its living fort rising from the sand, and an overnight camel safari out to the Sam and Khuri dunes, where you ride into the sunset and sleep under a vast desert sky. Bikaner adds its red fort and famous camel-breeding farm, and the road runs through Rajput cenotaphs and remote desert villages.

A representative 4-night flow. Every departure is privately tailored - we add Jodhpur, Bikaner or a longer Marwar circuit on request.

Day1

Arrive Jaisalmer

Arrival · Jaisalmer

Met on arrival and into the golden city as the light softens - a first sunset view of Sonar Quila, the great sandcastle fort, glowing above the desert town. Evening at leisure in your heritage hotel.

Stay Jaisalmer · Suryagarh / heritageMeals Dinner

Highlight The living fort turning amber to rose as the sun drops behind the dunes.

Day2

Jaisalmer - the living fort

Jaisalmer

A morning inside the living fort, where families still inhabit the lanes around delicate Jain temples and the old maharaja's palace. Below the walls, the carved honey-stone screens of Patwon-ki-Haveli - the grandest of the merchant mansions - and, at golden hour, the boats and bathing ghats of Gadisar Lake.

Stay Jaisalmer · Suryagarh / heritageMeals Breakfast

Highlight Sandstone glowing at sunrise from the Gadisar ghats, temples reflected in the water.

Day3

Sam Sand Dunes - a night in the desert

Jaisalmer → Sam (≈1 hr)

A short drive to the Sam dunes for the heart of the journey - an afternoon camel safari onto the rolling sand, your shadow long in the low sun, then a starlit evening of folk music, Kalbeliya dancers and dinner around the fire at a luxury desert camp.

Stay Sam · luxury desert campMeals Breakfast, Dinner

Highlight Manganiyar musicians singing in firelight as the dunes go from gold to silver.

Day4

Khuri & Lodurva

Sam → Khuri

The quieter Khuri dunes, far from the crowds, for a gentler taste of village desert life, and the abandoned Jain temples of Lodurva - Jaisalmer's exquisitely carved former capital, its toranas and a celebrated celestial tree standing amid the ruins. A final desert evening under the stars.

Stay Jaisalmer / KhuriMeals Breakfast

Highlight The lone, intricate torana arch of Lodurva standing against an empty desert sky.
