Prices are each tour page's lead-in figure, per person; your quote depends on dates, party size and hotel tier. For day tours and one- or two-night trips from the city, see Kolkata tours and trips from Kolkata.

Walk Another Mile started here. Bengal is our home — and the depth of it still surprises us a decade in. The state runs from the Bay of Bengal mangroves at sea level to the Sandakphu ridge at 11,930 ft, and the cultural distance is even greater: one state contains colonial Kolkata's intellectual coffee houses, the Sundarbans' tiger-haunted estuaries, Tagore's Shantiniketan, Darjeeling's tea estate bungalows, and the world's biggest cultural festival.
Bengal is a thinking person's destination. The state has produced four Nobel laureates, India's first universities, and the modern Indian renaissance. Travelling here is less about seeing and more about conversations — with rickshaw-pullers who quote Tagore, with adda regulars at Indian Coffee House, with rural Baul singers who treat philosophy as a folk song.
If you have one week in India, spend two days in Kolkata; you'll understand the country differently for the rest of your trip.
Bengal is geographically vertical — sea level to almost 12,000 feet across a single state. Most travellers do Kolkata + one Himalayan stop + Sundarbans.

UNESCO toy train, Tiger Hill sunrise over Kanchenjunga, century-old tea gardens, the Mall Road, and Indian-British heritage hotels. Two nights minimum.

South Bengal Delta
UNESCO World Heritage mangroves at the Ganges delta. Royal Bengal tigers that swim, saltwater crocodiles, river dolphins. Two-night boat-based wildlife immersion.

Rural Bengal · 3hr from Kolkata
Rabindranath Tagore's open-air university, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023, with the Sonajhuri forest, the Khoai folk-art market and the slow pace of rural Bengal. Best during Poush Mela (December) or Holi.

North Bengal · 3,900 ft
Quieter, greener cousin of Darjeeling — flower nurseries, Tibetan monasteries (Tharpa Choling, Zang Dhok Palri), and the Tibetan Bazaar. Often paired with Lava-Lolegaon.

Bankura district
17th-century terracotta temples carved with Ramayana scenes, Baluchari sari weavers, Dokra metalwork artisans. India's underrated Khajuraho — and few foreign tourists.

Nawabi Heritage
Hazarduari Palace (1,000 doors), Katra Mosque, Imambara — the last capital of undivided Bengal before the British took over in 1757. Overnight detour.

Northern Bengal Plains
Gorumara, Chapramari, and Jaldapara — Bengal's eastern Terai forests. Elephants, gaur, leopards, and the eastern Himalayan rhino population. Less touristed than central India.
Bengal has a complex climate — Kolkata is hot and humid, Darjeeling is cool and clear, the Sundarbans float between extremes. Here's the unified picture.
Our pick: Mid-October for Durga Puja (the once-a-year reason to come), or November–February for cool, dry, clear-Himalaya weather. Avoid the May–June pre-monsoon, when even locals leave Kolkata.
One of the world's great open-air art festivals — about 3,500 pandals across Kolkata, five days every autumn. UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2021. Our flagship offering.
Rabindranath Tagore — Asia's first Nobel literature laureate (1913). Shantiniketan, his open-air university, is a living monument. His songs (Rabindra Sangeet) are still the soundtrack of Bengal.
Macher jhol (fish curry), kosha mangsho, mishti doi, sandesh, rasagolla — the most refined cuisine in India for those who know. Six-course Bengali thali, eaten in sequence, never random.
Mystic minstrels of rural Bengal — UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Annual Baul gathering at Jaydev Kenduli (January) and Poush Mela (December) in Shantiniketan.
Kolkata is India's most architecturally European city — Victorian, Georgian, Art Deco. The Indian Museum (1814) is Asia's oldest. The Asiatic Society, Marble Palace, and Oxford Bookstore are still active.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway — narrow-gauge, steam-hauled, running since 1881. UNESCO World Heritage. The Joy Ride loop (2 hours) is part of every Darjeeling itinerary.
Fly into Kolkata (CCU) — Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International. Direct flights from Dubai, Bangkok, Singapore, Yangon, Dhaka, and all Indian metros. For Darjeeling, fly to Bagdogra (IXB) + 3hr drive uphill.
Indian e-Visa (evisa.nic.in) works for Bengal. Bangladeshis can travel under the simplified visa-on-arrival scheme. Sundarbans entry requires a separate permit — we arrange this.
Kolkata: light cotton year-round, light jacket Nov–Feb. Darjeeling/Kalimpong: warm fleece + light down jacket, even in summer (10–18°C at night). Sundarbans: long sleeves, insect repellent, neutral colours.
Indian Rupee (₹). Kolkata is fully cashless-capable (UPI everywhere). Darjeeling/Kalimpong have ATMs but carry ~₹3,000 cash. Sundarbans is mostly cash-only — withdraw before you leave Kolkata.
Excellent 4G/5G in Kolkata. Patchy in Sundarbans deep jungle — your boat will be off-grid for most of the trip (a feature, not a bug). Darjeeling: full coverage in town, weak in tea gardens.
Bengalis love a conversation — accept the tea, sit for the adda. Remove shoes at temples and homes. Sundarbans is tribal-settler frontier — defer to your guide on local etiquette.
Starting from Kolkata?
Most journeys into Bengal begin in Kolkata. Our city tours run from half a day to four, and our short trips reach the coast, Birbhum, the Sundarbans and the terracotta country — private, or by the seat.
Tell us your dates and interests — heritage, wildlife, festival, food, or a mix. Bengal is our home state, so the proposal comes from people who know the roads, the hotels and the seasons first-hand.
