The City

The golden age of Gujarat

In the 11th and 12th centuries, the Solanki kings ruled a prosperous, cultured Gujarat from Patan, and they left behind two of the finest monuments in India, a short drive apart in the state's north. Together they make one of the great, and still quiet, heritage days in the country - easily reached from Ahmedabad.

At Patan is Rani ki Vav - the 'Queen's Step-well', a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, many think, the most beautiful step-well ever built: an inverted temple of seven descending levels, its walls carved with over five hundred major sculptures of gods and celestial beings. It is so treasured it appears on the ₹100 note. A little away, at Modhera, stands the Sun Temple, built to catch the equinox dawn, its great stepped tank (the Surya Kund) lined with miniature shrines. And Patan is home to Patola - a double-ikat silk weave so complex that a single sari takes months and a fortune to make, practised now by a handful of families.

This guide covers everything for a day at Patan and Modhera - the step-well and the Sun Temple, the Patola weaving, where to stay, and how to fit them into a Gujarat trip.

What to See

Solanki architecture: Rani ki Vav and the Sun Temple at Modhera are the high point of the Solanki school — one of six regional grammars set out in Nagara vs Dravida.

The best of Patan & Modhera

A carved step-well, a Sun Temple and a near-magical weave - the Solanki masterpieces of northern Gujarat.

Rani ki Vav

The heart of Patan

Rani ki Vav - the Queen's Step-well - is one of India's most astonishing monuments: a vast subterranean 'inverted temple', seven storeys of steps and colonnaded pavilions descending to a deep well, every surface carved with more than five hundred principal sculptures - Vishnu in his ten avatars, apsaras, serpents and gods - in the crispest Solanki stonework. Built in the 11th century as a memorial by a widowed queen and lost for centuries under silt, it was excavated in the 20th and made a UNESCO World Heritage Site; it now graces the ₹100 note.

Give Rani ki Vav a slow visit, ideally in the softer morning or evening light - it is, quite simply, one of the great sights of India, and still blessedly uncrowded.

02

Modhera Sun Temple

Aligned to the dawn

The 11th-century Sun Temple, built so the equinox dawn lights the sanctum, with its magnificent stepped tank (Surya Kund) ringed by 108 miniature shrines. A serene, sublime Solanki masterpiece 35 km from Patan.

03

Patan Patola weaving

The world's rarest weave

The double-ikat Patola silk - where both warp and weft are tie-dyed to the pattern before weaving, so complex a single sari takes months. Watch the last few master families at their looms and see the Patola Heritage museum.

04

Sahastralinga Talav

A thousand lingams

The ruins of the great Solanki water-tank at Patan - once ringed by a thousand Shiva shrines, an ambitious feat of medieval water engineering.

05

The Surya Kund, Modhera

Stepped water temple

The great rectangular tank before the Sun Temple, its terraces a geometric cascade of miniature shrines - one of the most photographed sights in Gujarat, magical in low light.

06

Patan's old town

Jain temples & lanes

The old walled town of Patan, with its Jain temples, wooden havelis and the weaving quarter - a quiet, atmospheric wander.

07

Modhera Dance Festival

Uttarardh Mahotsav

The classical dance festival held at the Sun Temple each January (Uttarardh Mahotsav) - dancers before the floodlit temple and tank, a wonderful time to visit.

08

The Solanki story

Medieval Gujarat

Together, Patan and Modhera tell the story of the Solanki golden age - a prosperous, artistic medieval Gujarat whose stonework rivals anything in India.
